Cross Country (XC) Tips

Equipment (list is presented in order of importance):

  1. Quality running shoes - shoes are the most important piece of equipment, think of it like a helmet for a football player.

  2. Water bottle - we give plenty of water breaks throughout practice. Several of our practice locations do not have a source of water to refill bottles, plan accordingly.

  3. Running watch - you don’t need a fancy GPS watch, just something with a basic stopwatch.

  4. Athletic clothing - again, you do not need anything fancy, but synthetic tops, shorts, and socks help reduce chafing / blistering and are designed to wick away moisture.

RNK Running and Runners Roost are great locations with knowledgeable staff to help you find what you need. The coaching staff has 20+ years experience running retail and are more than happy to give recommendations.

Parent support:

  • New runners are going to be sore and a bit frustrated the first few weeks. Parents, one of the best things for you is to encourage your athlete to keep a long term view of their development as a runner while celebrating the little accomplishments.

  • Help your athlete to NOT compare themselves to their teammates. A continuous 3 mile long run for a new runner is a significant accomplishment and should not be compared to a senior who has been running for 5+ years and just completed a 13 mile long run.

  • Reach out to the coaches to learn more about the sport and ways to support your athlete based on what they want to get out of running.
